What is Cosplay? “Cosplay, a contraction of the English words ‘costume’ and ‘play’, is a Japanese subculture centred on dressing as characters from manga, anime, and video games, and, less commonly, Japanese live action television shows, fantasy movies, or Japanese pop music bands. However, in some circles, “cosplay” has been expanded to mean simply wearing a costume.” –Wikipedia.org. That in itself explains what cosplay means, but let me add that Cosplay has now become a world-wide hobby, and it is not restricted to merely a Japanese subculture.
